England footballer lives his dream playing at Newcastle United’ – Video

Waiting for Video...

A FOOTBALLER from Ashington got to the chance to make a dream come true, by playing at the home of Newcastle United for the England Schoolboys in their 2-0 win over Scotland at the Sports Direct Arena.

Kyle Downey, who goes to Ashington High School, played three quarters of the Centenary Shield match, before being substituted, but not until England were one goal to the good on their Scottish counterparts.

Michael Sweet, a student from Gateshead College, who’s from Darlington, gave England the lead halfway through the second half with a clever dink over the on-rushing Scotland keeper , before Peter Glen-Ravenhill, a student at St. Thomas More RC High School in North Shields, supplied the finish, after England skipper Jack Pounce’s long-range drive stung the hands of keeper Kieran Hughes in the 81st minute.

Hughes could only parry the shot into the path of Glen-Ravenhill, who slotted home cooly.

The Centenary Shield match marked 100 years of school football in Northumberland.

Scotland were in control of the game in the first half, but seemed to have left their shooting boots at home. With the score level at half-time, England were the dominant side after the break, creating numerous chances, before eventually running out 2-nil winners and sending a large proportion of the 2,535 strong crowd home happy.

With two of the three North-East-based players in manager Andy Williams’ side getting on the scoresheet in front of the Sky Sports cameras, it was certainly a night to remember for the squad.

NewsPostLeaderTV was there to take in the action and to interview the players after the game...
