Mixed fortunes in Sunday Cup for league’s pair

THE two Blyth and Wansbeck Sunday League sides in the NFA County Sunday Cup had mixed fortunes at the weekend.

Blyth Comrades came up against a strong Haltwhistle United and they struggled to come to grips against their opponents and went down 6-1. Daniel Long scored their consolation goal.

Burradon and New Fordley did much better and reached the next round with a 5-1 win away against Newcastle Westfield FC.

Two sides that earned the right meet in the Saints Shield final were Ashington Bubbles and North Shields Royal Arms.

Bubbles won at home against Blyth High Street by 4-0 with Kris Allington leading the scoring with a double. Futher goals came from Daniel Hislop and Craig Penny.

Royal Arms won 2-0 at New Delaval and Newsham courtesy of Mark Taylor and Scott Miles goals.

The Eric Anderson Cup final has been finalised with Blyth Top House winning their semi-final to earn their place against Red Lion Earsdon.

Top House won 3-1 at Blyth Percy Arms. Lee Brosnan scored for the Percy but goals from Curtis Miller, Jake Miller and John Moran won it.

Only two games were played in division one. Bedlington Community went down 6-1 at home to Ashington Grand. Michael Robinson scored a consolation for Community while Graham Todd (3), Michael Todd, Paul Hedley and Jamie Morgan won it for Grand.

Blyth South Beach had a comfortable 8-2 home over Wansbeck Flavour Bar. Craig Hopwood and Lee Richardson scored hat-tricks with Mark Richardson notching a double. Goals for Flavour Bar came from Stephen Frater.

Division two saw Cramlington Phoenix put a dent in Ashington Portland’s promotion hopes with a 3-2 home win. Graham Owens (2) and Chris Killen scored for Phoenix with Richard Hall and Robert Groves on target for Portland.

The fast improving AE Phoenix gained an excellent point away to Forest Hall with a 1-1 draw. On target for the home side was Paul Errington with striker Michael Freathy replying for Phoenix, who saw keeper Dean Farndale pull off a string of fine saves.

Marden Residents got back to winning ways with a 3-1 home win against Newsham Willow Tree with goals from Chris Darroll, Michael Wedderburn and Richard Thompson. David Millin scored for Willow Tree.
