Rangers claim top spot
BLYTH Rangers Valencia climbed to top spot in the table after a comfortable win over Ellington.
Ellington got off to a flyer when in the opening minute a long ball over the top caught Blyth’s defence napping and their forward raced clear down the right before pulling the ball back across goal for Ellington’s winger to hit into an empty net.
The weather was deteriorating and the pitch was cutting up, making it hard for Blyth to keep to their passing game, nevertheless Connor Vincent’s great cross for Josh Carr to volley home from ten yards put Blyth level within five minutes of the restart.
Ellington’s game plan was clear, loft the ball forward for their pacey forward to run onto, this however left huge gaps in the midfield and Vincent, David Cardill and Andrew Asman were all having lots of time on the ball.
Carr then turned provider when his free kick on the right was headed down by Kaelin Maddison and Rhys Brown was on hand to but Blyth in front.
The third from Robert Goodall was a great header under challenge, which looped over the keeper who remained rooted to the floor.
The second half was a lot less frantic. Neither team enjoying the weather, and finding it hard to play possession football. Vincent though hit a cross come shot from the edge of the area which beat everyone, and did look to hit the foot of the post before being cleared away by the Ellington defender but the referee had blew and judged the ball had crossed the line and Blyth were now four one up and heading to the top of the league.
Ellington’s coach was full of admiration for a strong Blyth side and gave Rhys Brown man of the match for an excellent performance throughout.
Blyth travel to Ellington again next week in the quarter final of the NACYP Cup. Kick off to be confirmed.
