STRIKER Glen Taylor thought his equalising goal from the penalty spot on the hour had put Ashington in with a ‘good chance’ of winning their FA Carlsberg Vase fourth round tie against Bodmin Town on Saturday.

However, the Black & Ambers went on to win a five-goal game by a 3-2 verdict.

Twenty-two-year-old Taylor, who recently joined the club from Spennymoor Town, cancelled out Glyn Hobbs’ first half opener for the hosts, and although Matty Grieve scored in injury time, Bodmin had taken a 3-1 lead with Steve Colwell and substitute Adam Carter on target.

But Taylor, a community health coach at the Newcastle United Foundation, said: “We came out pretty strongly at the start of the second half and after I had levelled with a penalty, I thought we had a good chance to win the game because it was one way traffic.

“But it was not to be.

“Consequently it was a massive disappointment and especially as we would have been at home in the last 16 against either Gornal Athletic or Wisbech Town.

“When you are drawn out of the hat first you are favourites to win on your own turf, and when you reach the quarter-finals of the competition then anything can happen.”

Taylor was with Whitley Bay when they lifted the Vase for a third successive year in the 2010-11 season with a 3-2 win over Coalville.

“I was part of a club who won the trophy at Wembley even though I couldn’t play as I was cup tied – and that’s what made our defeat hurt even more on Saturday,” he added.

But Taylor has targeted more goals for the remainder of the season.

“I’m happy with my own form,” he said.

“I’m enjoying playing every week and since I came back I believe I have done alright, but I want to score more goals before the end of the season.”
