Woodwork helps Terriers avoid heavier defeat

BEDLINGTON Terriers saw their impressive start to the season stutter with two defeats inside a week.

After briefly topping the fledgling league table with an impressive 5-0 victory over promoted Jarrow Roofing, courtesy of a brace by Anthony Shandran and a second hat-trick of the season by Alex Benjamin, the Terriers failed to consolidate their good form.

After disappointingly falling at home to Ashington 2-1 on the Bank Holiday Monday, Bedlington made the trip to Consett on Saturday hoping to put the derby performance out of their system.

After an entirely forgettable first half, the highlight of which for the travelling support was a fine Stewart free kick which smashed off the angle of the goal frame, it was the home side who looked the biggest threat going forward.

Consett took the lead ten minutes after the restart, when ex-Terrier Jamie Poole fired home with the Bedlington defence nowhere in sight.

Poole in particular had a fine game for the hosts, running the midfield in the second half.

Bedlington did respond, with a Benjamin curling effort tipped over the bay by Consett keeper Barry Poskett, then Shandran pulled an effort across the keeper, but unfortunately also beyond the far post.

In reality though, the home side could have added several more to their tally in a crazy 15-minute spell in the middle of the half, which saw them hit the goal frame no less than five times.

The Bedlington goal certainly led a charmed life with two other goal line clearances being required. Even the travelling faithful saw the humour in their team's good fortune.

The problem for Bedlington was that they were losing the midfield battle, and far too often resorting to long ball tactics which the imposing Consett back line were happy to soak up without any real danger.

The Terriers did finally create more of a threat with the introduction of Southern with 20 minutes remaining.

The visitors began passing on the floor more often and getting the ball into wide positions where more opportunities could be created by getting in behind the defence.

Indeed, there were a couple of opportunities and several instances of desperate goalmouth scrambles, but as the game wore on there was the distinct feeling that the Terriers could still be playing 24 hours later and they would not score.

In reality it was a disappointing performance, one far below that expected by the calibre of team out on the pitch.

Two bad results does not a bad team make, but certainly the Lowery/Perry management duo would have been scratching their heads as how to avoid it making three in a row when the Terriers got back on the road on Tuesday night to face another difficult encounter at Bishop Auckland.

This Saturday they return to Welfare Park for the visit of Billingham Town, who will be hoping to transfer their excellent home record on to their disappointing away form.

Next Tuesday night sees Bedlington in League Cup action when they make the short journey to Morpeth Town, who returned to Craik Park after their single season sharing with Bedlington at Welfare Park.
