Mixed fortunes for Ashington in cup competitions

Ashington Cricket Club’s first XI will take on Shotley Bridge at Langwell Crescent in the semi-final of the League Cup on Wednesday (June 24) starting at 6pm.

The Colliers booked their place following victory over Percy Main last week.

Matty Storey took 3-35 as the Villagers ended their 20 overs on 107-5.

After the changeover, opener Jack Jessop hit an unbeaten 52 as his side clinched the win from the fourth ball of the 17th over.

Meanwhile the Wansbeck side put up a brave fight against Tynemouth in the quarter-final of the Tyneside Charity Bowl before bowing out.

The coast side, members of the Dukes ECB North East Premier League, premier division, posted 157-7 with Piper leading the way with 64 and Armstrong an unbeaten 57.

Callum Storey returned figures of 3-35 from five overs.

Ben O’Brien smashed 45 and Stephen Boyd and Storey both hit 22 but Ashington were bowled out in the penultimate over, 16 runs short of their target. For the hosts, Macciocchi took 4-37.
