Blyth RFC travelled to Berwick for their first friendly of the season with a squad of 25, although several players were unavailable for selection.
Against a strong Berwick side who compete in the Border League, Blyth came out on top, scoring three tries to one.
Player/coach Graham Smith scored on his debut with his first touch of the ball, with other scores coming from Andy Sutherland and Wayne Davie.
New coach Dave Massie showed his commitment to the cause by travelling from his family holiday in the Lake District, returning straight after the game, and was reasonably happy with the performance, but added that there was still room for improvement.
Next week Blyth travel to Alnwick for what should be a much more difficult test as the opposition gained promotion to the NE leagues last season.
They then take on Wallsend in the first round of the County Cup the following week.
