TWO members of Ashington Boxing Club were in action at the Willowburn Leisure Centre in Alnwick at the weekend.
First up was 13-year-old Jake Murray making his debut against the more experienced Joe Maloney from the Empire School of Boxing in Blyth.
Murray boxed well but lost on a close points decision.
In the first round Murray was working out the jab of his taller opponent and it was not until the second round that he got in with the body shots.
In the third round he narrowed the points difference but failed to close the gap sufficiently.
Coach Alan Buller said: “Jake was a credit to the club and is looking forward to his next bout which will be after Christmas.”
Senior Jamie Napier was next on the bill against I Wyn, of Grainger Park.
Napier had not boxed since 2004 when a junior.
In the first round Napier boxed behind the jab to find his range and in the second he upped the pace.
Wyn came back with good shots of his own and in the third Napier threw some good combinations to win by a unanimous verdict.
Meanwhile, Ashington Boxing Club’s Josh Johnstone won at Stanley Lamplight Centre, where he fought through the last round of his bout against Callum Spoors with a broken hand.
