Second in the table Ponteland scored from the kick off when Ash failed to deal with a wet skidding ball and during a period of early pressure Pont further extended their lead to 10-0 with a second try from a rolling maul.

After struggling for the first 15 minutes Ash began to win some ball, and a sweeping move saw Dodds cross in the corner only for the try to be disallowed for foot in touch.

Ash continued on the attack and fly half Owen Jarvis dummied his way over for Ashingtons first try which he converted.

Ash went straight back on the attack and a great backs move from an attacking lineout saw Nathan Whitworth scythe through the centre to score Ashingtons second try and give Ash a 10-14 lead.

Despite the wet conditions both sides attempted to play attacking rugby and three minutes from half time Ash were forced to take a defensive lineout five metres from their line.

Seemingly in control, Ash managed to lose the ball at the back of the maul for Pont to pounce and score their third unconverted try.

Ash bounced straight back with forwards and backs combining. 10 metres out the unlikely centre combination of second rows Newman and Harrigan, saw Newman with a perfectly timed pass send Harrigan crashing through for a try under the posts, converted by Jarvis to give Ash a 15-21 half time lead.

Pont dominated for long periods of the second half, helped by a series of penalties and handling errors from Ashington, scoring four second half tries. Ashington fought their way back in the final 15 minutes, winger Josh Weeks proving unstoppable from 10 metres after a superb flat pass from replacement James Turner on his return after injury, Jarvis in a man of the match performance adding the conversion.

This fourth try brought Ash within seven points and gave Ashington two valuable bonus points.

This week Ashington entertain Sedgefield at the Rec, KO 2.15pm, with past players lunch starting at 12.30pm
