Ashington recovered from conceding an early pushover try to show great determination, grit and spirit to secure a deserved victory over Winlaton.
A great piece of defence by Cory and Nathan Whitworth set up a period of sustained home pressure and on the stroke of half-time Jack Rutherford drove over for a try in the corner after a good run by Johnny Arkle.
Connor Nichol, who had an outstanding game, set the standard for the second half with a great 60-metre run, unfortunately Ashington failed to convert the resulting penalty.
However, Mathew Moffat gave Ashington a 10-7 lead with a try after a charge down from Justin Niblock.
Niblock then added a third Ashington try after great runs from Nichol and Rutherford to extend the lead to 15-7.
Both sides had periods of pressure during the final 20 minutes and Ashington’s Johnson was unlucky to be held up two metres out.
The game finished with a penalty to Winlaton to give them a losing bonus point.
Ashington’s grit and determination gave them this deserved victory, taking them out of the relegation places and every one of the players could be proud of their effort and contribution.
Next week they play fellow strugglers Houghton at The Rec in a must win game, kick-off 2.15pm.
