Ashington travelled to table topping Ponteland with another inexperienced back line and suffered a 45-3 defeat.
They had a new centre pairing of Baz Metcalfe and Nathan Whitworth, and Ryan Dodds back from university at full-back. In the forwards Gareth Bewick started at No. 8 with Johnstone and Butler in the second row.
Ashington started much better than in previous weeks, with the defensive line getting quickly into the home side’s face and denying them space to run.
Bun two sin binnings, one in each half, did not help Ashington’s cause, but they were still a little unlucky to be 19-3 down at half-time, Merryweather, playing at fly-half kicked Ashington’s only score of the game.
The Ponteland openside flanker and inside centre caused problems throughout the game and were the real difference between the sides as Ponteland went on to score 26 unanswered second half points, despite some great defensive work from Whitworth in the centre and some strong runs from Dodds at full-back.
There are now no league games until January 3 when Ashington entertain North Shields at the Rec in another must win game if they are to move away from their current relegation position.
