FORMER professional boxer Billy Hardy was the guest of honour at Ashington Amateur Boxing Club’s end of season awards night.

Hardy not only presented the awards but also gave a talk to the young boxers and had his photograph taken with them.

Hardy, who boxed Prince Naseem Hamed in his time as a professional, was a big inspiration to the young boxers who attended.

The youngsters from the club, based at the Hirst Welfare Centre in Alexandra Road, were also joined by some younger children aged from eight-years-old who hope to be competing in the future.

There was a good turn out for the evening and individual awards went to Paul Chisholm for best junior boxer while best fight of the season went to John Johnstone.

Coach Alan Buller said: “We are keen to have more young people of all abilities and ages come along and take part in some of our regular boxing training, we run sessions Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 4pm to 6pm depending on age.”

For information contact Buller on 07933 132856 or treasurer Rob Story at the centre on (01670) 857810.

Buller thanked all of the boxers, volunteers, parents and committee involved in the club.
