NEWBIGGIN Boxing Club’s three remaining schoolboy championship boxers were in action at the weekend.
They travelled to Wakefield for the national semi-finals.
First to box was Joe Tyers against Yorkshire’s Callum Grace. Tyers took control from the bell, using his strong jab to good effect, taking a comfortable points decision.
Next up was last year’s champion and three nations champion Kai Hume. He took on old rival James Kimberley from Manchester.
There was some bad feeling prior to the first bell, with words being exchanged. But this was soon put right when the fight got under way as Hume punished Kimberley with every punch.
At the sound of the bell for the second, Kimberley refused to start and the fight was over. Once again, Hume reaches the national finals.
Ben Rees had it all to do against Bradford’s Harris Akbar. He boxed brilliantly from start to finish and was unlucky to be at the wrong end of a close points decision.
Newbiggin’s Jimmy Tyers takes on Scarborough’s Kyle O’Toole in a chief support fight on the England v Sweden bill at the Rainton Meadows Arena on Tuesday, February 26.
