BLYTH Running Club member Craig Birch was one of the lucky nominees selected to carry the Olympic torch on its journey around the country.

As Craig is at university in Manchester he actually ran with the torch in Fleetwood.

Although conditions were atrocious, with torrential rain, nothing could dampen Craig’s spirit and enthusiasm on the day.

Describing the atmosphere as electric and amazing, he was well supported by family and friends who had made the journey to share in his memorable day.

On his return to Blyth, he brought the torch to a junior training night where the juniors all had their photographs taken with Craig and the torch.

Blyth currently have an expanding and active junior section and are looking to recruit new members, so if anybody between the ages of nine and 17 is interested in running, the club can be contacted via e-mail to enquiries@blythrunningclub.org.uk and someone will contact them, or call (01670) 362668.
