A YOUNG karate star is hoping to represent his country after earning his first black belt.
Ethan Fuller, nee Hudson, earned his black belt last year just five years after first taking up the sport.
The 13-year-old, who is a member of Northern Freestyle Karate in Blyth and another club in West Sleekburn, took up karate after finding he was not enjoying other sports.
He worked his way from white belt to black – where he had to complete four hours of continuous exercises and a project – for which he was named student of the year 2010-11.
Ethan, pictured, said: “You don’t have to be good at it straight away, but I picked it up quite quickly and I wanted to keep coming back.
“My instructor John Cox has taught me loads and not just about karate; he has helped my confidence and taught me the importance of respect.
“One of the members of the club is called Colin, he is a 3rd Dan Black belt and he has been a great mentor to me.”
He added: “I hope to go onto complete all my Dan gradings – just five more to go.
“I also hope that one day I am able to join the England karate team.”
