Four members of Battle Hill Judo Club competed in the British Schools Qualification competition in Nottingham.

Ellie Hutton, representing St Thomas Moor RC Academy in North Shields, dominated with two wins with Ippon (maximum score) in the under 34kg to secure the gold award.

Josh Stoneman, fighting for Burnside Business and Enterprise College, Wallsend, joined eight competitors in the under 55kg’s category. He made it through the pool stage but was defeated in the quarter-finals and finished in third place.

Josh McKeown, of Richard Coates CofE Middle School, Ponteland, in the same under 55kg group, also made it through the pool stage and won his quarter-final convincingly only to suffer a narrow defeat on penalties in the final to take the silver medal.

Kieran Tweedy, of Astley Community High School, Cramlington, won all his fights in the pool stages of the under 66kg’s with some exceptional judo but was defeated in the semi-finals and took third place.

Hutton and McKeown have secured guaranteed entries to represent their respective schools in the prestigious British Schools Judo competition to be held at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield in April.
