Morpeth RFC Under-15s’ fine run of completing the double over local rivals continued last Sunday with a well-taken home victory over Berwick RFC.
The Mitford Road youngsters dominated a highly entertaining match, played in blustery conditions on the pitches up at Morpeth Common, to run out 22-0 winners over a competitive Berwick side.
An early charge from Morpeth’s Joe Turnbull saw the big second row power over for a great solo effort to get the first points on the board.
Despite playing into the wind, Morpeth continued to dominate but struggled to convert territory into points until flying wing George Devereux-Tinley took his chance to go over to extend the lead.
Playing with the wind to their backs in the second half enabled the home team to take advantage of the strong boot of fly-half Sam Eyres as he pinned the Berwick side in their own 22, enabling Morpeth to pressure the try line with strong and physical rucking and mauling.
Man-of-the-match Theo Gavaghan had his best game of the season at prop, dominating his opposite number before powering over to take a well taken try.
Ewan Kirk rounded off a good all round performance for Morpeth with virtually the last play of the match, working his way through a throng of opposition players to touch down and take a well-earned score.
Sam Eyres added to the four-try count with a well-taken conversion in difficult kicking conditions.
Thanks went to Morpeth’s George Ainsley and Will Allen who played for Berwick to ensure even numbers and a competitive match.
Morpeth now face Novos away on Sunday, which they hope will set them up for the much-anticipated County Cup clash with Tynedale – and a place in the semi-finals.
