Morpeth Harrier Sam Hancox was an emphatic winner of Saturday’s 12th Transped Blyth Valley 10k Road Race, which had just under 500 finishers.

In the ideal conditions, Hancox pulled away from Tom Cornthwaite of Salford after the first mile and extended the advantage to 30 seconds at the finish line.

Luke Adams of South Shields finished third while Lee Bennett of Elswick in ninth was the leading veteran.

Morpeth easily retained the team title.

Former Wallsend Harrier Danielle Hodgkinson, now of Birchfield, easily won the women’s race from North Shields Poly teenager Jacqueline Penn.

Judith Nutt of Elswick was the leading veteran in third place. North Shields Poly dominated the team competition.

Once again the organisation of the race was impressive, and this was due to the hard work from the members of Blyth Running Club, with more than 40 members helping on the day, led by the race organiser Anne Craddock.

The first Blyth man was Brad Clough with a top 20 finish, while Rachelle Fallon was the first Blyth lady.

Blyth Running Club thanked the sponsors, which included Transped Logistics and Port of Blyth, Start Fitness, Herrons the Jewellers, John Gunn, and the Quay Public House, and also Blyth Lifeguards for their assistance, along with the marshals, helpers and officials.

The full set of results are available on the Blyth Running Club website at www.blythrunningclub.org.uk
Over 150 of the finishers of the race were unattached runners and Blyth Running Club is inviting runners to their training nights.

The club have also introduced a new running group for complete beginners, led by Alison Lowes, a qualified ‘Run In England’ leader.
