A YOUNG sailor from Cramlington has won a trophy at a major regatta.
Joe Henderson won the silver fleet event at the Topper World Championship held at Dun Laoghaire in Ireland.
After two days of qualification racing, the 173 strong field was split into three fleets for the championship series - gold, silver and bronze.
Thirteen-year-old Joe qualified for the silver fleet and won the first two races of the championship before going on to dominate for the remainder of the week to win the trophy outright.
The racing took place in testing and variable conditions in Dublin Bay
Joe, who attends Cramlington Learning Village, is a member of Sunderland Yacht Club and Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club.
He is also a member of the RYA Topper North Zone squad but is hoping for selection to one of the RYA national squads this autumn.
The event was a great learning experience for Joe in winning races and leading a fleet at an international regatta, and at 13 he has the 2012 world championships in Holland to look forward to, and potentially South Korea in 2013.
Competing in the sport at a national and international level requires a considerable commitment from Joe and all the family to support him and involves travel all over the country.
Joe is indebted to Ian Turnbull Marine who have helped him with his boat preparation and provision of equipment, and also to Sunderland Yacht Club, which has fully supported his training throughout the winter.
He is always looking out for further support to help progress his sailing success and anyone interested in sponsoring the rising star can do so by e-mailing firstname.lastname@example.org
