Ashington-born boxer Josh Johnstone fended off a challenge from Middlesbrough’s Lee Solomon at the Federation Brewery at Dunston for the defence of the lightweight belt.

The 19-year-old, who used to box for Ashington ABC but who is now in the unlicensed scene for Wansbeck Warriors, was again under the watchful eye of coach Alan Buller.

He has been with Buller for 46 ABA bouts and five unlicensed, where he has won four and held two area belts.

Johnstone has fought ex-pro’s Chrisy Bennett and Billy Bell as well as John Spencer, and last week faced journeyman Solomon where he won in style.

If he defends the belt for a third time it will become his own.

Johnstone, who has made a big impact in the game, has been told he can go far and Buller said: “Josh is an exceptionally good boxer who deserves what ever comes along his way in the boxing game.”
