Karate club members shine in national finals

EIGHT members of Ashington Karate Club competed in the 45th KUGB National Champions event in Birmingham.

All competitors trained extensively before the event with Sensei Jill F Kelly, Sensei Keith Burns and Sensei Trish Bruce, and all their hard work paid off.

The Ashington ‘A’ team of Dylan Gibson, Alex Ralph and Kyle Duddridge came first in the under-16 team kata, while Ashington ‘B’ – Maya Burns, Caitlin Birdsey and Niamh Duddridge – came third.

Also, Maya Burns was third in the girls, Kumite (fighting) ten to 11-years-old group and Dylan Gibson was fourth in the under-16 individual kata.

The club has produced some of the best internationals in the country, many of whom started at the age of six or seven-years-old and competed for the club until they left to start their own clubs, or spent time at university and were instantly welcomed into those university clubs.

KUGB karate has 10,000 members throughout the country.

Ashington Karate Club train on a Saturday at Ashington YMCA from 10am to 11.30am and at Mowbray First School on a Thursday evening, where junior and senior classes are available.
