NEWBIGGIN Boxing Club’s members were involved in top competition last weekend.

Last Friday saw Lewis Scott in action against the highly experienced Joe Whitfield, of the North Northumberland Boxing Club.

At nearly 21-years-old and with more than 80 fights under his belt, Whitfield was always going to be a tough opponent for 17-year-old Scott.

There was a massive turn out of support for both fighters and none of them were left disappointed.

Whitfield deserved to take the narrow points victory and they both received the fight of the night award.

Newbiggin’s championship run continued with 14-year-old Jimmy Tyers in the National Schools Championship pre-quarter-final at Liverpool.

He was up against Kieran Wooland, of the Knowsleyvale Club in Liverpool.

Nothing would be getting in the way of Tyers moving into the next round, and for three rounds he dominated the fight.

He took a comfortable points decision of 20 points to eight and moves on to the quarter-finals in Wakefield next week.
