NEWBIGGIN Boxing Club hosted the Tyne Tees Wear round of the Royal Navy Junior ABA Championships.
Amongst some of the excellent boxers on show were two of Newbiggin’s team, Richy Stafford and last year’s quarter-finalist Lewis Scott.
Stafford, having only had five fights prior to this, was drawn against Liam Duke, of Bilton Hall, South Shields.
Duke had more than 30 fights in the bag.
Stafford got straight to work closing Duke down and putting him under pressure, although his opponent’s experience came through at times and got him a points decision.
Stafford boxed well and although he lost the fight he gained masses of experience.
Next in was the slippery southpaw, Newbiggin’s Lewis Scott against Newcastle’s Daniel Clark.
This was Scott’s first fight since December.
Scott soon found his rhythm and by the end of the second round was 8-0 up.
The fight continued with Scott being tricky and economical with his work commanding a 15-4 win after four rounds.
A good performance in preparation for the coming weeks.
The Tyne Tees Wear final will be back at Newbiggin Sports Centre on Saturday, March 26, where Scott takes on Redcar’s Joe McBride.
Scott comprehensively beat McBride last year, so he will be gunning for revenge. Boxing starts at 7pm.
