NORTHERN Gymnastics Club recently welcomed competitors to the club’s new venue at Unit 4 in the Hubbway Business Centre in Cramlington.
The club had been running gymnastics courses at its former venue in Unit 2 at the centre for the past two years where membership increased from 120 to more than 300 attending weekly sessions.
The club was formed in September 2007 and the demand and growth since has been exceptional.
Head coach Gemma Wilkinson said: “The club’s premises was full to capacity so when we had the opportunity to move to the much larger premises at Unit 4 we were in no doubt that this would enable the club to secure the growth and development of its activities whilst giving its gymnasts facilities equal to any other large gymnastics club in the UK.
“The development has provided the only full-time dedicated gymnastics centre in Northumberland.
“With the advent of the Olympic Games in 2012, a large demand is being anticipated by British Gymnastics and we wished to have the ability to cope in order that every child who wishes to can try out gymnastics for themselves.”
“Our gymnasts have been very excited during the refurbishment.
“It has been a huge project with many planning and technical challenges to overcome in order to transform this former industrial building into an acceptable, fully equipped modern gymnastics facility.”
The club now has a full size sprung floor area to meet competition standards together with two sets of asymmetric bars, a high bar, four beams, training and competition vaults, a full range of pre-school equipment and much more.
The reception and waiting area is light and spacious with large viewing windows and seating for more than 30 spectators, who can relax and enjoy refreshments from the snack bar while they observe the activities of their child.
The centre will soon have the benefit of new and modern changing rooms and toilet facilities for the club members, parents and visitors alike.
The move has already been successful and the gymnasts have settled in well
The club has introduced a number of new sessions providing much needed spaces for new gymnasts and increased its reception staff.
The club offers a wide range of gymnastic courses from pre-school children to adult only sessions.
All sessions are coached by British Gymnastic qualified coaches with enhanced criminal record clearance to work with children.
Sessions are run from 4pm to 8pm Tuesday to Friday and from 10am to 6pm Saturdays and Sundays.
