Newbiggin’s Butokokan Judo Club hit the gold standard at this month’s Bushido Za-Zen Junior National Championships in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.

Its under-eight-year-olds were the first of the 11-strong group to fight, and for some of them, this was their first competition.

For the boys, Andrew Duddridge got a silver medal, with Jay Coleman and Tom Common taking bronze.

Lucy Common was entered into two categories, and she came out with bronze in both.

Next up to fight, Josh Macdonald, took a silver medal in his second competition and won his first fight.

Alex Brown and Mia Key both took gold in their categories, and both won fights by ippon within three seconds.

Robyn Key and Jack Murphy earned silver medals, Emma Wright won a bronze, and Acey Ross took home both bronze and gold medals.

Butokokan Judo Club, founded in 2011, trains at Newbiggin Sports Centre on Tuesdays from 6pm to 7pm and on Saturdays from noon to 1.30pm, and at Ashington YMCA on Monday and Friday evenings from 6pm to 7pm.
