A five-man team from Newbiggin Golf Club won the Davison Cup after beating Close House in the final played at Newcastle United Golf Club.

In a fiercely contested match, Newbiggin’s team of Merril Lansbury, Wayne Marshall, Phil Rawlings, Russel Jacques, and led by county player Craig Penny, eventually came out on top 3-2.

Penny was undefeated in all of his matches with further victories by Marshall and Rawlings completing the win.

The Davison Cup is contested by all of the teams in the Hadrian Golf League and Newbiggin were managed by vice-captain Alan Bains, who made special mention to Mick Woodhouse, Cameron Bowman, John Miller Dent and Kevin Harmison – the other players who had represented the club in previous rounds.

He said: “This has been a great team effort by all nine players who represented Newbiggin Golf Club in this competition and I am very proud of all of them.

“On many occasions the matches were won on the last green with the last putt, with such a fine line between winning and losing, but the players all played their part.”

The players will be officially presented with the trophy at the annual presentation dinner on Friday, October 17, at the Centre of Life in Newcastle.
