Newcomers take titles in junior and senior races

BLYTH Running Club Juniors held their annual handicap two-mile race on a two-lap course around the beach path to finish on Blyth promenade.

Conditions were bright and breezy, with a northerly wind.

There were more than 40 runners with the final ones, Jake Jansen and Chris Lillico, off 11 minutes after the first.

The race was won by newcomer Josh Fiddaman, who steadily worked his way through the field to build up a commanding lead.

Second was Ellen Keenan, who just beat Natalya in a sprint finish, although Natalya was awarded second as Keenan has not joined the club yet and was running as a guest.

As a result, Connor Marshall was awarded third.

Jansen finished eighth and set a new course record of 10.59, Charlie Hedley was the was the fastest girl with a time of 13.02.

Two days later the seniors held their own handicap over 6.5 miles.

Unlike for the juniors, the conditions were atrocious and can only be described as ‘monsoon’ conditions, with heavy rain and strong winds.

With such atrocious weather conditions it was remarkable that 38 members turned out to take part.

First off was newcomer Jane Cassells just after 7.15pm as the remaining runners huddled together in the shelter of the Dave Stephens building to keep warm and dry.

One by one runners left their protective shelter, until the remaining pair of Robbie Barkley and Jake Jansen were set away some 25 minutes later.

The race was won by new member Jon French in a time of 46.05.

In second place, 23 seconds later, was Mal Darbyshire, with Graeme Stewart third, a further 30 seconds adrift.

Fastest time was recorded by Robbie Barkley with 39.37, and fastest lady was Julie Clark in 45.32.
