Three young powerlifters from the Parkhead Powersports Club, based at the Hirst Welfare Centre in Ashington, took part in the British Senior Championships held in Burnley.

James Duff and Ryan Strang, although still classed as juniors, lifted against far more mature and experienced athletes but performed with distinction.

Duff is now senior champion in the 83kg body weight and also took a junior squat record with a massive 302.5kg.

Strang, an under-20 lifter, came in a credible fourth in the 83s and got a competition personal best 240kg squat.

Victoria Embleton, taking part in her first major senior competition, took second in her body weight category and also lifted a personal best 170kg in the squat.

The organisers thanked the Hirst Welfare and GBPF, the Keyfund Federation, Rothley Trust, UK Coal, Coalfields Regeneration Trust and Ashington Town Council for their support.
