A YOUNG judo star is celebrating after winning a gold medal in just a few seconds.

Whytrig Middle School pupil Connor Smith, 12, won gold at the British Judo Association’s Schools Championships held at Sheffield in the Under-50kg category.

At the same event, Stephen Nugent, 14, of Newcastle’s St Cuthbert’s School, won silver in the Under-73kg.

It was the first time either had competed at the event.

Stephen’s brother Michael, 17, and Sebastian Dadbin, also 17, who attends Whitley Bay High School, both just missed out on medals with a fifth place finish in the Under-73kg and Under-55kg categories, respectively.

They all train at Lakeside Judo Club in Killingworth.
