TWO of Newbiggin Boxing Club’s fighters were in action last weekend in the national quarter-finals of the Junior ABA Championships at Manchester.

Jimmy Tyers and Keiran Robertson took on capable opponents.

Tyers was up against Patsy McCann, of Kettering, last year’s European champion and current three nations champion.

Tyers piled on the pressure from the first bell, however, somehow the judges did not see it that way and gave McCann the fight by 20 points to 16.

Robertson was up next as he took on Leigh’s Ben Grimshaw.

It was Grimshaw’s 17th fight while Robertson only had six bouts under his belt and knew he had it all to do.

From the first bell Robertson got to work and landed some big shots forcing a count at the end of the round.

The second was slightly quieter but the third was a different story with Robertson hitting Grimshaw with four big rights and forcing an immediate stoppage.

Next for Newbiggin is the national semi-finals at Newbiggin on Saturday, with boxing starting at 1pm.

Robertson will not need to box at the semi as there was no entry from Liverpool, so his next fight will be the national final in Leeds on May 12.
