YOUNG female rugby stars are looking to go off like a rocket as they create a new team.

Cramlington Rockets Under-16s have been formed with a view to playing fixtures in the north east as well as Yorkshire and the north west.

Training takes place on Sunday mornings at Cramlington Sports Village between 11am and 12.30pm, with head coach Lee Carbutt being assisted by Siobhan McHugh.

Lee said: “I have been working within Astley Community High School with a lot of the girls and their enthusiasm to continue to play has enabled me to set up a club in the area for girls under 16 who want to play rugby outside of a school environment.”

The team is looking for players and fixtures and anyone interested in joining or arranging a game can contact Lee Carbutt on leecarbutt@thunderrugby.com or 07824 827439.

Training started well despite many girls being missing due to pre-arranged holidays.

The training sessions are based around skills drills and games, aimed at improving the girls all round rugby knowledge.

Jo Drapier, Rugby Football League regional manager, said: “The girls game in the north east is growing from strength to strength and such is the demand, girls sections within rugby league clubs are on the increase.

“The girl’s passion for the sport and willingness to learn new skills and make new friends has been truly commendable.”
