TWO of the most experienced students of a Newbiggin-based judo club successfully took part in separate competitions recently.

Butokokan Judo’s James Houlder, 22, went to the NACYP Championships in North Shields and picked up a bronze trophy after competing in a tough group.

And the club’s most experienced competitor, Andrew Douglass, 21, made the long trip to the Bushido Za-Zen National Championships in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, and picked up two hard fought and well deserved silvers in the mens u73kg catagory and also in the black belt u73kg category.

Meanwhile the recently relocated group completed its first club grading and competition.

The new members who were graded have only been involved in the sport for six months.

Butokokan Judo is located at Newbiggin Sports Centre and trains Saturday afternoon.
