Successful month for Ashington Karate Club

Six members from Ashington Karate Club travelled to Chesterfield to compete in the KUGB Shotokan Cup.

The competition is for brown and black belts only and all members performed well.

Gemma Gibson was second in the girls’ Kumite under 5’3”, Louie Cummings was third in the boys’ Kumite 5’ to 5’5” and Niamh Duddridge made it to the semi-finals in the girls’ Kata.

Meanwhile, successful grading for 1st or 2nd Dan took place at Alnwick.

Members Jake Pickering and Kieran Constantino passed their 1st Dan and Alex Ralph and Maya Burns passed their 2nd Dan under Sensei Andy Sherry, 9th Dan, and Sensei Bob Poynton, 8th Dan.

And a successful month for the club has been rounded off by Sensei Jill Kelly and Sensei Ian Willis passing their 6th Dan at Bath.

It is a high senior grade and there are less than 20 in the country

Sensei Kelly is also only the second woman in Britain to have achieved the grade.
