Thousands of people are expected to descend on Newbiggin-by-the-Sea this weekend for the town’s annual triathlon event.
The competition consists of a swim, bike ride then run, all done as a continuous race.
It starts at 10.15am on Sunday with the first of four groups swimming out to the Couple sculpture in the bay.
Competitors then jump on their bikes for a three-lap race around the town centre and surrounding area before putting on their running shoes for two laps along the promenade, where organisers VO2Max Racing Events expect thousands to cheer on everyone to the finish.
Organiser Gary Wright said: “This year the most competitive racers amongst the triathletes will be trying to qualify for the European Championships at Kitzbühel, Austria, in June 2014.
“We had to close the entry list early this year as it was such a popular event – the weather report is good and it should be a fantastic day.”
Businesses in Newbiggin are offering special ‘Tri’ deals including ‘Pit Stop Bacon Butties’ from Cafe Indulgence and free bets from Chisholm Bookmakers, and the event is supported by the Newbiggin-by-the-Sea’s Portas Town Team this year.
