New home for boxing club

AFTER years of uncertainty, with fires, eviction and then having to use a squash court to train their champion boxers, Newbiggin Boxing Club have finally found a new home.

The former apostolic church in Gibson Street has been completely transformed.

The grand opening of the club’s new home is today and will host a number of important guests.

Local cricket star, Steven Harmison will do the honours on the night. Labour MP for Wansbeck, Ian Lavery, will attend, rubber stamping his ongoing support for the boxing club’s future.

Local companies that have worked tirelessly to have the gym ready and given massive support to the cause will also attend.

The doors will be open from 6pm for anyone to have a look inside the new facility.

The club thanked all those who have helped. Pringle Building Services have transformed the interior, MK Electrics did the electrical modifications, O’Connor Cleaning Services for a thorough clean following the builders. Moscrop Skips, Northern Structures and all the people that have put hours in to getting the place ready to go.

Meanwhile Kieran Robertson attended a GB selection camp last weekend.

Both he and Jimmy Tyers are through to the next round of the NACYP championships at Barnsley on October 27.
