Seghill reel from heavy defeats in county sevens competition

SEGHILL entered a team in the Northumberland County Sevens tournament, which took place at Alnwick Rugby Club.

The team, who have not played 7s before, played in the U18s tournament, though most of the players would have been eligible for the U17s competition, so it was always going to be tough against older, more experience opposition.

Seghill opened up with a match against North Shields, who had already played one game. Shields' match sharpness showed, as they dominated play and took an early lead.

Seghill battled hard, and John Peace and Nick Heard both made some fine runs, before having to be replaced because of injuries, and Seghill found themselves 17-0 down at the break.

Seghill matched Shields in the second half, and only conceded a late try, to go down 22-0.

Next up were a very strong Tynedale side, who dominated the match from the start. Hooker Andy McLean and Stephen Gluck put in some fine tackles for Seghill but were unable to prevent a heavy 37-0 defeat.

Seghill lost Paul Latham to a chest injury before their match with Northern, and although Nick Heard started the game, he had to be replaced late in the first half because of a head injury.

Although Seghill started slowly, and allowed Northern to take a 17-0 lead they fought back with some strong, crunching tackles from Liam Lonsdale, and tries from John Peace and Craig Embleton. Craig Smith added a conversion.

Seghill continued to press forward but were unable to level, going down narrowly 17–12.

Seghill's final game saw them face the home side, Alnwick. With the injury toll rising, and Micky Blewitt being added to the injury list, Seghill were always going to struggle, and suffered their biggest defeat of the day, a score of 39-0.
