A HIGH school pupil from Northumberland Church of England Academy in Ashington has picked up a bronze medal in a national powerlifting competition.

Stefan Pope, a Year 12 student, competed in the Great British Powerlifting Federation Junior Championships and came third.

He is a member of Hirst Powerlifting Club and is trained by Fred Mackenzie but it was through NCEAsport’s fitness and conditioning module that he found his talent for powerlifting.

Andy Blight said: “As director of NCEAsport at the academy, I am very proud of Stefan’s achievements.

“When you consider that NCEAsport was only created in September, it is wonderful to see that already students are reaping the benefits of top quality training combined with opportunities to compete at regional and national level.

“I am hopeful that more of our students will enjoy the same success that Stefan has.”
