Success in the ring for boxing trio

NEWBIGGIN Boxing Club were in action at the Tyne Tees Wear schoolboy finals at Newbiggin Sports Centre on Sunday.

Bradley Simm and Charlie Burt were both unlucky to lose close points decisions against quality opponents.

Joe Tyers took on Sunderland’s Carlo Geraldi. Tyers had already lost to last year’s national champion Geraldi at Newbiggin last year.

After some intense preparation Tyers was ready for revenge. From the first bell he was in control, and dominated the whole fight with a strong jab and high work rate.

Geraldi’s only respite was to hold on, which got him a warning. Tyers took a comfortable points victory.

Last year’s national and three nations champion, Kai Hume, was in action against East Middlesbrough’s Liam Lillystone.

Quality head and body shots forced two counts, and the fight was stopped at the start of the second.

Ben Rees took on old foe Callum Roadment of North Shields. Rees jumped on his opponent from the first bell and forced his man onto the ropes.

The second round was much more controlled and Rees took control with a strong jab and switching to the body.

The body shots proved too much for Roadment and he ended up on his knees taking a count. The referee allowed him to continue, but another barrage of body and head shots forced another count and the fight was stopped.

Tyers, Hume and Rees all travel to Everton on Sunday for the next round of the Championships.

Newbiggin’s Ben Young and Jake Lonstaff are in action on Friday at Consett.
