For the first time in the league this season Ashington seconds came unstuck – only days after their skipper Doug Potts had challenged his side to complete the season unbeaten.
The Colliers had been crowned B1 division champions the week beforehand, but playing in their penultimate game against second placed Ponteland, they fell short by 22 runs at Langwell Crescent.
The visitors closed on 147-8 after being 60-6 at one stage with two wickets each for Alex Storey and George Collins and one apiece for Michael Levison and Michael Thewlis.
The home side stuttered to 8-3 in the early stages of their reply before Potts top scored with 40 closely followed by Michael Thewlis (38).
However, Ponteland struck at vital stages to bowl the home side out for 126.
On Saturday, Ashington seconds are away to Shotley Bridge.
