Ashington Cricket Club’s first XI skipper Greg Williams said his side produced a ‘top notch performance’ in Saturday’s comprehensive seven wickets win over Consett at Langwell Crescent.
The result saw the Colliers collect their fifth successive win of the season, and they still hold a 15-point advantage over their rivals.
Yet again, Williams won the toss and complimented groundsmen Mick Brown and Arnie Gilholm.
“Our performance was top notch again today on a good wicket, and restricting them to 170 was a great effort,” he said.
“The wicket had been covered and we had a little bit of rain before the game, so when I won the toss, we thought there might have been a little bit in the pitch early on, only it didn’t turn out that way with the wicket playing well and being easy to bat on.
“It was one of the best pitches I have played on here for a long time, so full credit to our groundsmen Mick Brown and Arnie Gilholm who put some good work in.”
As the Consett innings fluctuated, Williams was nevertheless happy.
“Callum [Storey] and Ben [Harmison] both bowled good opening spells and we got the two openers early on,” he said.
“Consett’s next two batsmen pulled things back for them a little bit and rebuilt, then our spinners Paul Rutherford and Ani Singh came on and picked up a couple of wickets at good times.
“We’d fielded well in our first four matches and we have done that again, and just before the end we finished off the innings with four quick wickets.
“Hats off to Consett as their batsmen weren’t going to hang around, wanting to get as many runs as they could so as to improve their chances of winning the game.”
Williams described his side’s batting display as being ‘perfect’.
“We lost Ani [Singh] early on, but Neil Wood, Jack Jessop, Ben O’Brien and Sean McCafferty were just brilliant,” he added.
“We switched the order around again and the lads delivered.
“Every one of them got in and no one threw their wicket away, the dismissals came about because the lads played positively.
“The running between the wickets was good and it was a perfect performance with the bat.
“But nothing changes in my eyes, we will continue to take every game as it comes and let teams worry about us.”
