Young footballers are celebrating

YOUNG footballers from Blyth and Ashington are celebrating after reaching the national finals of the GAME ON Midnight Leagues.

The day-long tournament, organised by The Coalfields Regeneration Trust (CRT), kicks off at Doncaster's Keepmoat Stadium on Saturday, July 4.

More than 60 teams of 14 to 16-year-olds from coalfield communities in the north east played in leagues in Blyth, Ashington, Sunderland, Stanley, Durham and Peterlee.

The sessions aim to provide young people with something positive to do in the evenings.

On Friday, May 29, a dozen of the top teams met at North Shields' Powerleague Soccer Dome to play for their chance to go to the national finals.

Teams Red Bull Bingo Wings and Hairy Lemons from Blyth and Davey A from Ashington will now travel to the finals with other successful north east teams from Sunderland and Stanley.

Chris Scurfield, sports inclusion officer at Blyth Valley Arts and Leisure Trust, said: "Our Game On Midnight League in Blyth is hugely successful.

"In partnership with the CRT and local police we help to reduce anti social behaviour in the borough at a time when it is most prevalent.

"The leagues give children a chance to express themselves through football and also qualify for regional, national and international competitions."
