WOLVES are giving former Sunderland and Leeds United defender Ian Harte a chance to win a contract at Molineux.
Harte, released by Roy Keane at the end of last season, contacted Wolves' former Sunderland boss Mick McCarthy requesting a trial in a bid to resurrect his career.

And McCarthy, who knows the left-back well from his time as manager of the Republic of Ireland, agreed to the player's request.

He said: "Ian Harte is training with is and will be travelling to Scotland with us as part of our pre-season.

"He's here for a couple of weeks and we'll see what he looks like.

"He's a free agent. He's 30 years of age, he's got great quality, he's got good experience with 64 caps, so we'll have a look at him."

Harte joined Sunderland last summer from Spanish side Levante but the move never really worked out.

Despite carrying a goal-threat from free-kicks and the penalty spot, he never really had an opportunity fall his way and he failed to make more than a handful of appearances.

Harte might have more of a chance with Championship Wolves – another club who are not the strongest in that position.

McCarthy said: "George Elokobi is our first choice left-back but we don't have any real left-sided cover so we're having a look at 'Harty'.

"He trained yesterday morning and looks OK at this moment, so we'll take him to Scotland.

"I'm hoping Micky Gray will sign and he's still training with us, as is Daniel Jones.

"But Daniel Jones isn't a left-back in my mind, he's a wide-left player, as is Micky. He's wide-left or wide-right, he's not a left-back."
