A DOG has been found with his ears cut off and covered in blood in Bedlington.
The male black greyhound was found by a member of the public on Monday, April 20, lying down on a grass verge on Bank Top, Bedlington.

He was covered in blood and had had both ears entirely removed.

He also had pieces of black electrical tape stuck to his legs and on his back.

The member of the public took the dog, which was not microchipped or
wearing a collar, to Robson & Prescott Veterinary Centre in Morpeth
before contacting the RSPCA.

The dog is currently recovering at the vet surgery and receiving the vital treatment he needs.

Now the RSPCA is urging anyone who knows who the dog once belonged to,
or who may have seen or heard anything suspicious, to get in touch as
soon as possible.

RSPCA inspector Ian Smith said: "This is an horrific and sickening act of cruelty.

"It is clear this dog's ears have been removed by a
sharp implement, which must have caused him unimaginable pain and
distress.

"Thankfully he was rescued early and taken to safety, else he easily
could have died.

"We just hope someone will now come forward with vital information to help us discover what happened.

"If anyone was in the area at the time and saw or heard anything
suspicious, or if anyone knows who this dog may once have belonged to,
we would urge them to contact us as soon as possible."

If anyone has any information they should contact the RSPCA National
Cruelty and Advice Line on 0300 123 4999 and ask to leave a message for
inspector Ian Smith.

I am so disgusted about what has happened to this beautifull dog Dougie but unfortunately this sort of cruelty is happening all the time by these evil greyhound racing people. If a DNA test is done on Dougie his bloodline could be traced and hopefully the owner who did this barbaric act will be caught and prosecuted personally I would have his ears cut off let him feel the pain. Untill all greyhound racing is banned this sort of cruelty will go on and on why these evil people do this beggers belief as there are plenty of rescue places that will take unwanted dogs in "The Greyhound Lurcher Welfare Rescue" do a wonderfull job they take in hundreds and all are rehomed. I myself have two greyhounds and they make the most wonderfull pets they are very gentle and do not need a lot of exercise. I hope the evil person gets caught.

As an international greyhound protection organisation, we were horrified to read about this poor dog.

Sadly, this is just the latest of a string of cases throughout the British Isles, where greyhounds have been discovered killed or mutilated, often with ears cut off, so racing owners and trainers cannot be traced from the dogs' tattoo markings.

Although we hope the despicable individual responsible for this most recent atrocity is soon caught and brought to justice, the greyhound racing industry is also very much to blame for creating a situation where these beautiful dogs are treated merely as commodities, to be ruthlessly disposed of when they can no longer be used for the purpose of money making.

According to our research, as many as 15,000 greyhounds, bred for the British racing industry, are put to death every year, after failing to make the grade as racers or when their "careers" on the tracks come to an end.

It is for this reason that we are calling on the public not to attend or bet on greyhound racing, so that this appalling death-industry fades away through lack of financial support.
