GLS and SL Cabrio reworked into 850-horsepower dream machines

Brabus has unveiled the latest fruit of its tuning efforts on the great and the good of the Mercedes range. This is the 850 XL, a large (in every conceivable sense of the word) SUV based on the GLS.

It joins the 850 Biturbo Cabriolet, itself also a recent newcomer, in wringing 850hp and 1069lb/ft (neither number a misprint) from AMG’s 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8. This is no longer a 5.5-litre anything, however, as it’s been bored and stroked to an altogether more sensible 5.9.

Add a billet crankshaft, flowed heads and new turbochargers (for ‘new’ read ‘enormous’), and you have an engine to reckon with. Plus a tyre supplier on speed dial, presumably.

The result is that the S-Class-based 850 Biturbo Cabriolet can lay claim to the title of world’s fastest four-seat ragtop. That’s 217mph’s worth of fast, so good luck picking an argument with that one.

With 23-inch rims under a 30mm suspension dump, the Cabriolet has the stance to go with its power. And of course being a Brabus machine, it has a sort of studied evil to its styling that makes sure the image is right up there too.

And it’s black, of course. Though you can fully expect to see one – or, more likely, one of each – wrapped in gold and parked across half a dozen disabled bays outside Harrods any time soon.

The owners won’t care about the fines as they’ll already have paid upstairs of a quarter of a million quid per car. Brabus doesn’t quote an actual price, and since the entire interior can (and will) be personalised it would be largely irrelevant anyway – but the Cabrio show car currently for sale on its website would set you back £275,000.
