Here’s how to stand out among a crowd of 5 Series or E-Class owners…

Launched in 2007, the Jaguar XF quickly became popular with executive car buyers seeking an alternative to the usual suspects from Merc, Audi and BMW. The original model was replaced last year – and today it makes a very tempting prospect on the used market.

Stylish and well equipped across the range, the XF was available with a choice of engines. These included the popular 2.7-litre V6 diesel, which was superseded by the 3.0 V6 in 2009; in later years, a 2.2 diesel with a 52.3mpg official consumption figure was added to the range, too.

There’s also the XF R, whose 5.0-litre V8 petrol engine definitely makes it the family hooligan. Like all hooligans, it’ll do some damage – principally to the state of your wallet, though if you have a gravel driveway and you floor it at the wrong moment your house won’t have any windows left.

As with any car that cost a lot new, the ill-conceived purchase of a second-hand XF can turn out to be a painful mistake. But if you’re prepared to spend a bit more than £15,000, you can start looking at desirable 3.0D V6 Premium Luxury models from 2009.

Move up to £20k and a low-miler from 2011 will give you a bit of change. A 2013-on facelift model will be come on to your radar, too.

Whichever you’re looking at, listen out for squeaks and rattles from within the cabin and search for electrical woes with a fine toothed comb. Check the brakes, too – and indeed everything else you can.

So long as you don’t find anything that looks like it’s going to cost money (as in, anything at all), you’ll find the XF a compelling car to buy. It’s classy and it handles beautifully – and there’s no better way of standing out among a crowd of 5 Series, C-Class and A5 drivers. Worth it for that alone.
