Vauxhall’s Corsa has been revealed as the nation’s favourite first car.

A study of insurance data showed that the venerable Vauxhall, which has been with us in various guises for 24 years, was the most popular choice of car among the UK’s 17 and 18-year-olds.

The Corsa was followed by key hatchback rivals the Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Polo, with the Renault Clio and Ford Ka rounding out the top five.

The data was uncovered by a MoneySuperMarket study, examining the most commonly insured cars among 17 and 18-year-old drivers. The research also revealed the staggering sums young drivers are having to pay out to insure their first set of wheels.

Even the cheapest – a Peugeot 206 – costs an average of £741 a year and for those lucky enough to land a funky Fiat 500 as their first car the insurance costs alone are an eye-watering £5,488.

And that’s only going to get worse with changes to how compensation payments are calculated set to push up premiums further.

A MoneySupermarket spokesperson said: “Young drivers could soon see their insurance rate rise by up to £1,000 as costs hit their highest ever recorded levels. So, it’s not surprising that young drivers are trying to keep the cost of their car down.”

Here’s a run-down of the nation’s most popular first cars, and the frightening amount of the average first-year insurance premium.

1. Vauxhall Corsa – £2,065

2. Ford Fiesta – £2,749

3. VW Polo – £2,654

4. Renault Clio – £1,455

5. Ford KA – £1,585

6. Fiat 500 – £5,488

7. Fiat Punto – £1,175

8. Citroen C1 – £2,860

9. Peugeot 206 – £741

10. Mini One – £3,920

To help young drivers keep on top of the cost of motoring, MoneySuperMarket has put together a guide on getting cheaper insurance.
