Annoyance. That’s the entirely understandable emotion you’ll feel when you rock up to a do in your AMG GT R, only to find the car park positively littered with variously-coloured versions of your car.

Orange County-based tuning shop Dime Racing has recognised this potential problem and addressed it in its Dime Racing Edition AMG GT.

Based on the AMG GT S, this is quite a conversion. There’s a shortage of detail in the public domain but the headline claim of 745bhp is enough to get your eyebrows arching. The motor is “upgraded”, which could mean anything, but with an extra 160bhp over the standard S you’ve got to think there’s more than just a remap involved.

Add on race-team input on the suspension, aero, wheels and cooling and it’s starting to look like a proper going-over by an outfit that knows what it’s doing.

The main difficulty with aftermarket tuning of course is that it often invalidates the manufacturer warranty on the car you’re tuning. Given Dime’s relatively bargainacious price of “around $150,200”, which is just $20k more than the AMG GT S’s price in the US, you’d certainly expect this to be an issue with this one.

But it isn’t. The car will be sold at “select Mercedes AMG dealers throughout the US”, which means it’s covered by the factory warranty. And that is very interesting.

Dime reckons it’s going to turn out 100 of these beasties a year. Unsurprisingly, deposits have already been slapped down on the first batch.
