Rock or rap? Sheeran or Swift? Everybody has their own opinions on what the perfect driving music is but a new survey claims to have determined once and for all what the nation’s favourite driving tunes are.
Timed to coincide with Wednesday’s 2018 Brit Awards, the new poll claims to show not only the ten favourite in-car tunes for Britons but also reveal the differing musical tastes between different car brands.
In a sign that Wayne’s World is still having an influence more than 25 years after it was released, Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody tops the charts, with 23 per cent of all drivers naming it as their favourite road trip track.
Another rock classic – Guns N’ Roses’ Sweet Child O’ Mine – is second on the list, favoured by 20 per cent of drivers, while Ed Sheeran’s Galway Girl was rated as number three.

Overall, pop music (42 per cent) is the main genre of choice for motorists, followed by rock and metal (20 per cent). In comparison, only three per cent claim they would opt for classical music and four per cent dance and house music.
The research also reveals that almost three-quarters (71 per cent) of British drivers are most likely to listen to the radio in the car, over any other form of entertainment. 12 per cent opt to use a music streaming service and just four per cent prefer the sound of silence.
The research from Goodyear Tyres has also revealed rather varied music tastes among car owners; BMW drivers are most likely to listen to pop music (55 per cent), whilst Skoda drivers would opt for rock and metal (42 per cent) and classical tones (17 per cent) over pop tunes (16 per cent).
Jaguar drivers appear to be in a lane of their own – they are most likely to listen to a music streaming service (40 per cent) over any other form of in-car entertainment and are more likely to listen to an audiobook (20 per cent) than any other type of driver. Rock and metal (40 per cent) and R&B (20 per cent) are their music genres of choice.
“With advances in technology – in-car wifi, BlueTooth connectivity and streaming services – it’s a surprise to see that radio is the preferred choice of in-car entertainment amongst British motorists,” comments Kate Rock-Rees, Goodyear Tyres.
“Music has the power to make you feel good, even when you’re caught up in traffic and whilst technology moves forward, we expect that power to stay the same.”
