New four-door goes on sale soon
The Audi A5 and S5 coupes have been joined by their new four-door Sportback counterparts. One instant advantage is more room. Not only more room than in the coupe but also more room than in the previous Sportback. Passengers get 11mm more shoulder space and 24mm more knee space in the back.
Passengers can also carry a bit more luggage thanks to the 480 litres of cargo area, again up, this time by 15 litres.
What hasn’t changed is the engine line-up, so the A5 has the choice of 2.0-litre engines, either petrol or diesel, in a variety of power outputs. The most powerful option is a 3.0-litre straight-six diesel with 282bhp, but that gives way to the engine in the S5, which is a 3.0-litre TFSI petrol unit with 349bhp on offer.
Both those two most powerful units come with four-wheel drive as standard, something which is an option on the rest of the range. This works in conjunction with the four driving modes and, in the two most powerful engine choices, an optional sport differential.
Inside there is the very splendid Virtual Cockpit but once again it’s an option rather than standard. Also optional is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, a B&O sound system and more.
Since the old model started at £30,050 it’s a fair bet than the new car will attract a modest premium, but we’ll find out exactly what that is when the order books open in the next month or so.
