Spoiler alert! After years of asking, it seems that Subaru is about to give fans what they want – a properly hot BRZ.

The standard BRZ and its Toyota GT86 twin have been lauded for their excellent balance and sharp handling rather than straight line speed but many commentators have suggests a touch more than the standard 197bhp wouldn’t go amiss.

Now Subaru in America have basically confirmed the people will get what they want – at least in the States. A recent tweet stated: “Stay tuned…6/8/17. #STI” and carried an image of a BRZ tailend carrying a whacking big STI-logo’d spoiler.

Spy shots of the car show more carbon fibre in the bigger front splitter and side skirts, along with some meaty looking Brembo brakes but official details are thin on the ground. While other STI models use turbocharging to boost output, there’s no word on whether the BRZ will get additional aspiration, a retuned version of its existing 2.0-litre unit or even something based on the 2.5-litre engine that powers the WRX STI. An STI concept shown at the New York Motorshow in 2015 came with a claim of nearly 300bhp from the turbocharged unit developed for the BRZ Super GT racer.

Hopefully all will be revealed later this week, including whether this is to be a US-only model. Given Subaru’s devoted fanbase in the UK and Europe if it is, the Japanese manufacturer can expect a lot of angry voices clamouring for a European version.
